Aspiring Youth Founder Honored with
2008 Ambassador of Purpose Award

In 1992 visionary John Meredith founded Aspiring Youth of Houston. Through his many hours of volunteering with at-risk youth, and seeing them parade through the justice system, he knew that something had to be done to help these unfortunate victims of circumstance. John did what few else would. Instead of looking the other way, he took the incredibly selfless step of leaving a career of practicing law to devote himself to helping kids who would otherwise have no one.

In honor of his altruism, Arrow Child & Family Ministries named John a 2008 Ambassador of Purpose. The Ambassadors of Purpose Luncheon was held at the River Oaks Country Club, with special guest speaker Jenna Bush. In attendance were John’s family, who has over the years graciously shared him with Aspiring Youth, as well as many friends and collages. On behalf of all the thousands of children that have been helped in the Aspiring Youth Program, we would like to take this opportunity to proudly say “Thank you, John”.

Aspiring Youth’s Annual Valentine’s Dance

Our Valentine’s Dance this year was a complete success! Not only did the Aspiring Youth National Junior Honor Society at Marshall Middle School raise money for their Disney World Trip, but the Marshall Cheerleaders also sold refreshments to help raise money for Cheer Camp. Everyone had a great time and the turnout from the student body was sensational.

DJ Quest played some of the best music, and the decorations the Aspiring Youth NJHS students made really helped make the atmosphere feel full of Valentine’s Cheer. Positive activities as simple as this change many a vulnerable child’s life. We thank you all for your continued support that makes Aspiring Youth’s work possible.

Aspiring Youth’s Book Club Gives to their Community

Aspiring Youth students are encouraged to join our Book Club to develop their comprehension skills, and instill a joy for reading that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. This year the Aspiring Youth National Junior Honor Society and Marshall’s 8th grade Gifted and Talented students have decided to give back to their community by reading to the Ketelsen Elementary Pre-K classes.

The book club meets every Wednesday to practice reading the book chosen for the next week. They assemble before they read to the class to make sure that every student has practiced and is prepared to read in front of an audience.

Our Aspiring Youth students love giving the readings; and when possible, at the end of the reading our Aspiring Youth students give the little children a small gift such as stickers, candy, or even the book that was read. Reading is very important in our society and important for our Aspiring Youth students. If you know of any place that gives away class sets of books on the Pre-K or even Kindergarten level please let us know.

Aspiring Youth Experiences the African Children’s Choir

Besides working with at-risk children after school, Aspiring Youth provides many positive activities that will change many a child’s life forever. On Monday morning February 25th, thanks to all of you and to our wonderful partnership with the Missouri City Chapter of The Links, Aspiring Youth students from B.C. Elmore Middle School were able to enjoy a memorable performance of the African Children’s Choir.

Through the use of drums and A cappella, the African Children's Choir has astounded audiences everywhere. Composed of children between seven and twelve years of age who come from five countries in Africa - Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria and Ghana – they seek to raise awareness of the need of destitute and orphaned children in Africa. Each child in the Choir has a story to tell. Each child has a dream - a hope for tomorrow. They want to be teachers, doctors, musicians and pilots. Watching these young children perform and hearing their stories was a life changing influence for our own young Aspiring Youth students.
