Ammons Scholarship Winners Chosen!

|
The Ammons Law Firm has awarded four $20,000 college scholarships to worthy Aspiring Youth students. Each student wrote a short essay, and designated judges evaluated and selected the winning essays. The competition is open only to students who participated in an Aspiring Youth After-School Program for at-risk youth. The scholarships are donated by Houston attorney Rob Ammons (www.ammonslaw.com) and are the first annual Ammons Scholarships to be awarded.

Friday, May 18th, was a night to remember. Charles and Jana Fay Bacarisse served as honorary chairpersons for the evening that included a “Silent Auction”, music by Pete & the Boys Western Band, and awards to Oliver Luck, McConnell Jones Lanier & Murphy LLP, Judge Caroline Baker, and the Missouri City Chapter of The Links.

The Master of Ceremonies, Doug Dawson, provided sparkling repartee particularly when he introduced his former Oilers teammate, Oliver Luck. Together they joked and then joined with Judge Caroline Baker in congratulating Aspiring Youth on our current success. The highlight of the evening came when two of the Ammons Scholarship recipients spoke of their gratitude and gave an account of how Aspiring Youth had changed their lives. This event truly provided us with inspiration for the year to come. |

Aspiring Youth’s 4th Annual Book Club Luncheon |

Each year, Aspiring Youth students are encouraged to join our Book Club to develop their comprehension skills, and instill a joy for reading that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. This year’s book, “The Watsons Go To Birmingham” by Christopher Paul Curtis, was a humorous account of an African American family during the violent summer of 1963. |

At the end of the school year, each student at Marshall Middle School was awarded a Barnes & Noble Gift Certificate at their annual Aspiring Youth Awards Ceremony. At B.C. Elmore Middle School, the students received their gift certificate at a special lunch event that was followed by a good discussion on irony, plot devices and other literary aspects. The teachers and volunteers were encouraged as they reflected on the students’ growth and learning from the Aspiring Youth activities throughout the year. |

Aspiring Youth at Law Day Luncheon on May 1st |

The Law Day Luncheon is organized in Houston by the Houston Young Lawyers Association and is celebrated on May 1st each year. On that day this year, more than 400 lawyers, judges and students, including Aspiring Youth participants, gathered to celebrate Law Day. Eight Aspiring Youth Program students were chosen from B.C. Elmore Middle School to attend the luncheon. Two fortunate students were given the honor of leading the Pledge of Allegiance and our students were delighted for a chance to shine. |

3rd Annual Healthy Choices for Teens |

The Missouri City Chapter of The Links, in collaboration with Aspiring Youth, sponsored the 3rd annual “Healthy Choices” on May 19th. The day long program started with a power breakfast in the Martin Luther King Building of Texas Southern University and an introduction to the Mistresses of Ceremonies: Gina Gaston (KTRK-ABC 13 Television) and Melinda Spaulding (KRIV Fox 26 Television).

The students then viewed five Role-Play Dramatic Interpretations performed by different members from Ensemble Young Performer that covered issues from Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Teen Obesity, “Hip-Hop” culture, Self Esteem, Depression, and Alcohol and Drug Abuse. These activities are designed for the students to make healthy choices in their lives and steer clear of the negative influences affecting many of their peers. |

New Aspiring Youth Intern has Joined Our Team |

|
Deidre Thomas has joined Aspiring Youth as an intern through the American Humanics program and will be working with us until next May. During her internship she has many competencies to which she needs to be exposed. She has taken on several large projects, not the least of which is taking the Lead Role in Houston for a National Youth Volunteer day.

|
Deidre is presently attending the University of Houston and expects to graduate with a Bachelors of Science in Sociology, a minor in African American Studies and a certificate in Nonprofit Management through the David M. Underwood Chapter of American Humanics. |

Aspiring Youth's mission is to prepare at-risk youth to
aspire to and attain their highest degree of success in school and in
life. To fulfill our mission, Aspiring Youth focuses on the middle school
years when children are transforming from childhood to teenagers. The
choices made during the pre-teen years are the foundation for each
student's future success.
