“They Had a Dream Too” at Museum of Fine Arts

In commemoration of Black History month , Aspiring Youth students from Jane Long and Chrysalis middle schools participated in a field trip to the Houston Museum of Fine Arts which featured a private viewing of the documentary film “They Had a Dream Too”. Created by the Houston Young Lawyers Association, the film examined the civil rights movement from the unique viewpoint of people who were teens during the movement.

Members of the Houston Young Lawyers Association were on hand to quiz students afterward, and awarded lots of great prizes to students who demonstrated a good grasp of the material presented in this evocative film. Each student there was excited to receive a very cool “They Had a Dream Too” tee shirt. Afterward, students had an opportunity to tour the museum.

Aspiring Youth at Houston Hispanic Forum

On February 10th, Aspiring Youth Students from Marshall Middle School participated in the 21st annual Career and Education Day for the Houston Hispanic Forum. This event, sponsored by BP, lasted all day. The students were given lunch and the opportunity to speak with professionals about careers available in their future. They learned about financial aid, scholarships, applying for college online and were given a list of the 21 things to do in high school to get to college.

Ten BP scholarships, presented at the event, assist Hispanic youth in achieving their professional and personal goals.

Gala Committee Volunteers Needed

As we know, it takes a village to raise a child, and right now we are in need of some village leaders! Please consider lending a hand on our Gala Committee, or Silent Auction Committee. Your commitment could be as simple as contacting a few places you patronize to request auction items, or, if you prefer to be more involved, we can surely find a place for you. If interested, contact Karen Davis a kdavis@aspiringyouth.org, or call 713-334-3330.

Thanks from Aspiring Youth Scholarship Winner

I want to thank you and Aspiring Youth for the scholarship I received. I don't even remember the essay I wrote or what it was about, but I did remember winning the scholarship in the 8th grade. It was truly appreciated because I really needed it to help pay for school. I currently attend Prairie View A&M University and my g.p.a. for my first half of my freshmen year is a 3.4.

The Aspiring Youth program really motivates me to do well in school knowing that I have support coming from all over. For that I truly want to say Thank You and hope to hear from you soon!
                                                                                                         Thanks, Kirby Meador
