Aspiring Youth’s 10th Annual TASTE was a Great Success
|

|
 |
|
Over 200 students participated in this year’s TASTE or “Take A Student to Your Employment” day. This event, in which area corporations, businesses and law firms host Aspiring Youth students for a “business lunch”, is meant to help the students envision a future of meaningful employment. However, feedback indicated that the students were actually an inspiration to many of the employees! |

The students were exposed to many different businesses; from Aviation Engineers to Car Dealerships to Accounting firms to a Television Studio, and, of course Law Firms! They really had fun, and came away with a lot of new things to think about. We could not have done this event without the most important element, our gracious hosts, to whom we offer our sincerest thanks. |

Aspiring Youth Students Attend “Angels of Light”

November 28th and 29th marked the beginning of the Holiday Season as Second Baptist Church hosted 300 Aspiring Youth students and staff during their annual “Angels of Light” Celebration. The students delighted in a circus lit atmosphere with puppets, gingerbread houses and a scene set with Christmas magic; and the night was full of fun entertainment by the Second Baptist’s Youth group.

A special comedian filled everyone with laughter, and then dinner, dessert and gifts completed the night. Aspiring Youth students and staff were elated to have the opportunity to attend this beautiful event and would like to thank Second Baptist for sponsoring a wonderful start to the Holiday Season!

Aspiring Youth and The Links at The Ensemble Theatre
|

On December 1st The Links partnered with Aspiring Youth to bring 40 students from B.C. Elmore to the Ensemble Theatre for an exciting look at the inner workings of a theater. This year the project was planned around the "Twelve Ways of Christmas" production, a holiday play that presents different perspectives of what Christmas is and can be to each of us individually.

After lunch, the students had an opportunity to tour the theatre, meet the playwright, participate in a 45 minute theatre workshop and meet with the Artistic Director. In the end the students were enlightened by a private talkback with the cast of the play and finally the play itself. |

Aspiring Youth Participates In WAMU Kids Day |

|
On October 4, 2007, Aspiring Youth began a 9 week project at B.C. Elmore Middle School for WAMU Kids Day. WAMU (Washington Mutual) partners with Aspiring Youth, local schools and other organizations to provide students the opportunity to learn about business, marketing, financial management and entrepreneurship. With WAMU Kids Day students learn about the different aspects of business and then take what they learn to create their own business.

Aspiring Youth worked and trained a talented and dedicated group of 10 students from B.C. Elmore Middle School. They came up with Tiger Mart, which would be a novelty shop where a variety of products could be sold. The students then made pillows, jewelry and other items to be sold in their store. They created their own business plan, goals and mission statement; and they paid themselves $20 an hour as wages. Also as part of the project, they took out a business loan and paid interest on it. |

The big day for WAMU Kids Day came on December 7th when the students went to “Market Day” and were able to see all their work displayed. The student market was open from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Washington Mutual Branch on Broadway, and students from over 19 area schools sold their products and competed to see who would make the biggest profit. Products from the Aspiring Youth students were in huge demand, and the people had to form lines. Everyone wanted the pillows and jewelry from Tiger Mart! |

The 14th Annual Power Tools for Nonprofits Conference
|

On November 14th Aspiring Youth of Houston was honored to attend the 14th annual Power Tools for Nonprofits Conference sponsored by CenterPoint Energy in collaboration with the University of Houston Educational Technology and University Outreach. |
|
|

|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
|
The event was filled with workshops that consisted of the key skills and measures needed to work efficiently and effectively in the nonprofit community; and keynote speaker, Robert Fuller, probed “rankism” and other cutting edge topics. This valuable learning opportunity has resulted in the creation of action plans to take Aspiring Youth of Houston to another plateau in 2008. |

Aspiring Youth's mission is to prepare at-risk youth to
aspire to and attain their highest degree of success in school and in
life. To fulfill our mission, Aspiring Youth focuses on the middle school
years when children are transforming from childhood to teenagers. The
choices made during the pre-teen years are the foundation for each
student's future success.
