8th Annual "College For A Day" at TSU |

Aspiring Youth, the ladies of Links, Inc. and Texas Southern University collaborated this year to coordinate one of the most exciting "College for a Day" Programs ever. On Saturday, April 1, 2006, students from Jackson Middle School, Long Middle School and Marshall Middle School in Houston Independent School District, and students from Kirby Middle School and Oak Village Middle School participated in this event. | |||||
| Professionals from the math, science and technology industry were the guest professors during the "College for a Day" Program; and the students also had the chance to meet and visit with the Mistress of Ceremony, KTRK-ABC's Gina Gaston and the Honorable Vanessa Gilmore. | ||||||

On April 13th, Veronica Herrera from Leadership Houston and Rice Alum hosted 65 Aspiring Youth students at Rice University. The students were able to tour the campus and meet and mingle with college students. The students talked with the Aspiring Youth participants about college life and ways to finance college. The students ended the day with pizza - a true college meal. | |||||
Aspiring Youth TAKS Olympics at Marshall Middle |

On April 12th, the Aspiring Youth After-School Program at John Marshall Middle School hosted the TAKS Olympics to prepare students for the Texas Assessment Knowledge and Skills Exam. The students were divided into teams of four to answer TAKS related questions in language, arts, and math. After rounds of elimination, the last two teams standing were ready to be crowned TAKS Olympians. Every year this proves to be an exciting and fun way to motivate the students to excel in the TAKS exam. | |||||

On May 11, 2006, 7:30 p.m. the Houston Young Lawyers Foundation (HYLF) will hold its annual Fun Run/ Fun Walk that benefits HYLF's Grant Program and Aspiring Youth of Houston. The Houston Young Lawyers Foundation was created in 1992 to support the charitable programs of young lawyers in Harris County. Map to Success Poster Contest |

This March and April Aspiring Youth students participated in the "Map to Success" Poster Contest. Students are divided into teams to visualize what they think "success" looks like and how to get to that concept of success. After the students decide on an idea, they then transfer that idea to poster board. Winners of the "Map to Success" Poster Contest receive ribbons and trophies. This year's first place winners are: Xavier Camarille and Peter Arevalo from Marshall Middle School. | |||||

The Missouri City Chapter is a Houston-area affiliate of The Links, Incorporated, an international service organization with a membership of more than 10,000 women of African heritage. There are 274 chapters in the United States (including Hawaii and Alaska) and around the world. The organization is committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the identities, culture and economic survival of all people, particularly those of African origin, through cultural, educational and civic programs. | |||||
| Locally, the Missouri City Chapter programs include ArtSmart, an introduction to the visual and performing arts with career orientation for middle school students, and College for a Day with Aspiring Youth of Houston. | ||||||
Aspiring Youth's mission is to prepare at-risk youth to aspire to and attain their highest degree of success in school and in life. To fulfill our mission, Aspiring Youth focuses on the middle school years when children are transforming from childhood to teenagers. The choices made during the pre-teen years are the foundation for each student's future success. Aspiring Youth supports the following events: |

Kroger Food Stores will also donate 1% of your grocery purchases if you use the Aspiring Youth Kroger card with your purchases (please let us know if you would like for us to send you a card to use at Kroger). Donations to Aspiring Youth are tax deductible to the extent allowed for 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations.
