First Ever Aspiring Youth
"College For A Day" at Rice University

Veronica Herrera, from Greenberg Traurig law firm and a Rice University Alum, hosted 65 Aspiring Youth students at Rice University. The students were able to tour the campus and meet and mingle with college students. The students talked with the Aspiring Youth participants about college life and ways to finance college. The students ended the day with pizza - a true college meal. We appreciate Veronica organizing the first ever Aspiring Youth "College for a Day" at Rice.

Aspiring Youth Students Visit U of H Law School

Students from the Aspiring Youth Program at Marshall Middle School attended an event hosted by Shreya Shukla and the U of H Law. The students participated in a mock class lecture, and had the opportunity to hear from different people on their experiences leading up to law school. It was an amazing success, and we hope to continue it for next year as well. Iris Hernandez was given a special award and recognized as "best law student" for her keen insight during the mock class.

Aspiring Youth Students Take Field Trip to
Fiesta Texas in San Antonio

On June 3rd, outstanding Marshall students that excelled during the Aspiring Youth TAKS Olympics were rewarded with a field trip to Fiesta Texas. The bus left at 6:00 a.m. and did not return until late in the evening. The students and chaperones enjoyed riding the rollercoasters, playing games and winning prizes, highlighting the day with the biggest rollercoaster at Fiesta Texas, "The Rattler".  After having a fun day in the park, the student assembled at a 50's style diner for pizza, drinks and sundaes.

New Staff at Aspiring Youth

In June we gained several new staff members. Karen G. Davis has joined Aspiring Youth as Vice-President of Development and Marketing. Her interest in Aspiring Youth was sparked through her husband Mark’s past involvement as Financial Manager. After spending many years at the helm of another successful non-profit organization, she brings with her many transferable skills; and more importantly, she has a passionate commitment to building literacy skills in children.

We also have several Summer Interns. Melissa Scott, a Summer Intern sponsored by the ExxonMobile Community Summer Jobs Program, is a senior at Bethune Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida, majoring in Psychology. She has joined our staff as a Programs Assistant, and she has been very helpful with the young Aspiring Youth students. Another Summer Intern, Rafael Aguinaga, is work-study student from The Art Institute of Houston. Rafael serves as an Office Assistant / Multimedia Assistant.
