Aspiring Youth Gala on February 17th - Save the Date

Each year Aspiring Youth holds an entertaining and exciting Gala, and this year promises to be better than ever with great company, fantastic food, and tempting auction items. Please bring your friends, family and associates with you to share this lovely evening at the Houston Country Club. Mark your calendars for February 17, 2007, and plan to have twice as much fun at our 8th annual "Reaching For the Stars" Gala.

Your attendance is just one of many small ways in which you can make a huge difference in the life of a less fortunate youth.  You can lend a hand on our Silent Auction committee or consider a donation to our Silent Auction; if you or (someone you know) has an item or service to contribute contact Karen Davis at (713) 334 - 3330, Ext. 309.

Summer Program Improves Math and Science Skills

The Summer Program held at Marshall Middle School from June 5th to June 29th was a complete success. This year students worked at improving their math and science skills. They conducted a group science project to learn the Scientific Method, and they reviewed basic geometric principles. The students also learned how measurements apply to everyday life and engaged in a hands-on-activity, cooking, to apply what they had learned about measurements.

Field trips included a "College for A Day" trip to visit The Art Institute of Houston; a visit to Fiesta Grocery Store, and a visit to First Bank. At First Bank, they were given "hands-on- awareness" of the many banking career opportunities, and they learned the importance of math in today's society.

Outstanding After School Program Student

Each year there is one student that stands out above the others. Last month Jalisa Lackins, a 7th grade student at E. O. Smith Middle School, won this notable distinction. She was rewarded with a bicycle for her outstanding efforts this year in the Aspiring Youth - Target Hunger After School Program.

Aspiring Youth Book Club Luncheon

Aspiring Youth students from B.C. Elmore Middle  School participated in an Aspiring Youth Book Club. They met weekly to read and discuss the year's  chosen book, "Our America: Life and Death on the  South Side of Chicago" authored by LeAlan Jones  and Lloyd Newman with David Isay. At the last  meeting, they enjoyed discussing the book over  lunch at Brady's Landing Restaurant; and they were able to talk with the author LeAlan Jones via the telephone.
